In early 2025, I was given the opportunity to write a 2 minute string quartet piece as part of a Guildhall collaboration with the National Gallery. Myself and a group of my peers would each choose a painting from Room 32 of gallery, and write a piece based around the painting. I chose Saint Mary Magdalene by Guido Reni
Read the program note and watch the performance below:
Mary Magdalene: follower of Christ, witness to his crucifixion, and the first person Jesus appears to upon his resurrection. Despite being venerated in many major branches of Christianity, a negative stigma still surrounds her. Centuries of patriarchal church rule has meant her legacy is shrouded in myths and falsities. This piece seeks to honour her memory, with a gentle, rocking melody accompanied by dissonant harmony, before opening up into a sweeping lament.
