Leaving Tynemouth centres around a melody played by the clarinet during the middle of the piece. All that comes before and after serves only as a premonition, or memory, of this melody. I regularly visit Newcastle, and Tynemouth is amongst my favourite places to go when there. Being somewhere you love, with people you love, for only short periods of time can leave you with a sense of aimlessness and longing. These are themes I wished to explore through this piece. Throughout the film, various shots of Tynemouth beach are shown. I wanted to give the film a ‘home video’ aesthetic, which is conveyed through numerous directorial decisions. I hope through this film, you can fall in love with Tynemouth as I certainly did. Or if nothing else, bring you three minutes of peace.
